Al Hirschfeld at the LC

The Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Collection presented an exhibition in 2001 with the assistance of the Caroline and Erwin Swann Memorial Fund for Caricature and Cartoon. The Swann Fund supports an ongoing program at the Library of Congress of preservation, publication, exhibition, acquisition, and scholarly research in the related fields of cartoon, caricature, and illustration.
1) Selection decisions
These drawings were selected from a donation by Hirschfeld to the LC in celebration of the library's centennial as well as the LC's existing collection. The set is meant to reflect Hirschfeld's career and recall his professional start. The exhibition was/is funded by the Swann Memorial Fund which means it is sustainable and is in keeping with their interests in preservation and exhibition of these types of works.

2) Metadata
The metadata provided for each piece is very extensive; however, information for the digital object is limited. Each piece is accompanied by a brief paragraph, locating the work within Hirschfeld's history. We also learn the construction of the drawings, whether watercolor or etching, for example. Finally, we know the year it was created and learn about the subject, as well as how the work arrived at the LC (gift or purchase) and the LC unique identification number.

3) Object Characteristics
The digital objects are all JPEGs and are accessed from one folder with sequential filenames. You can click on the thumbnail to see the larger JPEG which first appears at 87%. If you click again it will move to full-size.

4) Intended Audience
The intended audience would be those conducting scholarly research in the area of caricatures, cartoons and illustrations, as well as those interested in their preservation and exhibition - all of this is derived from the mission of the Fund that enabled this exhibition.
