From Horses to Horsepower: Studebaker Helped Move a Nation

http://www.sil.si.edu/ondisplay/studebaker/
This is a short history of the Studebaker Automotive Company. It was developed in November 2004 and is part of the Smithsonian Libraries' Automotive Trade Literature Collection series.

1) Selection decisions
The images chosen are all from the Trade Literature collection of the Smithsonian. This collection digitizes the Literature produced by the Studebaker Corporation. It is mostly literature on the cars but also includes images of the factories, and the company founders from Studebaker publications. It focuses mainly on 5 models of Studebaker. It’s possible, but not made clear if the reason those were chosen is that those publications were the only ones available. If so then they digitized everything.

2)Metadata
Each image lists the publisher (usually Studebaker Corporation) the title of the book, the location of the publisher and the year. All also say “Images from the Trade Literature Collection”. The credits of the collection list the display curator, site designer, and expert acknowledgments. It also has digitization info.

3) Object Characteristics
Primary navigation is done by choosing the model of car. You can also look at all images or just factory images.
On the credits page this digital imaging information is listed:
"Original images captured at 300 dpi using
Phase One Power Phase digital scanning backPhase One Image Capture Software

Images stored as TIFFs. High resolution web images reduced to 72 dpi and rescaled to 750 pixels on the short side. Low resolution images reduced to 256 colors and rescaled to 750 pixels on the short side.”

4) Intended audience
Audience is people interested in the Studebaker Car, Automotive buffs or people interested in Automotive trade publications of the time period.
