Star Wars Archive

www.chez.com/swguide

When it comes to StarWars this website claims to be “your source for: movie, facts, toys, products, catalogs, docs, ads and more…” We’ll see about that.

Collection Principles
This is a collection featuring StarWars vintage action figures from the 1970s thru the 1980s. The collection consists mainly of action figures although it does also include catalogs, “technical maps” of toys, trading cards, and wallpaper (for your computer). This does not seem to be the work of an archival, library or museum organization, or Lucasfilm project, more or less, it seems to have been put together by that persistent “guy in a basement.” Oh, Basement Guy when will you learn?

Metadata
Not much. In fact as you look at the menu it is a little confusing as to what your options are. There is “Docs & Scans Photo Index” file that consists of images of action figures in their original packaging there is a date available but the user isn’t told what the date is symbolic of. The “docs” are scanned images of StarWars advertisements (although we don’t know anything else about them), the “official docs” is one scanned image of a signed Darth Vadar photo (no metadata is offered on that image). No file format is given about any of the images.

Object Characteristics
The images of the toys themselves are probably images taken by a digital camera. Brochures were probably scanned. They are color. The creator of the website uses the term “document” very generously and it’s not clear what it is he/she means because he refers to an image of a Storm Trooper as a document as well as wallpaper for your computer.

Intended Audience

Anyone with an interest in StarWars and/or action figure collectables.

On a related note: Good news! George Lucas in association with Gentle Giant is in the processes of creating a digital library of the Lucasfilm archives. I'm sure it won't be anything like what Basement Guy created.
