"A Summons to Comradeship"

This online collection is available through the combined efforts of the University of Minnesota Libraries and the Minneapolis Public Library. The collection presents World War I and II posters and postcards from government, commercial, and charitable organizations, and is multi-national in scope. The collection was made possible through an IMLS grant.

In regards to the selection decision, the site states that "three-fourths of the combined total from both collections, over five thousand posters, were suitable for digitization and description after concerns such as physical condition, copyright, and duplicates were considered."

Each war poster was captured using a Power Phase FX digital camera system. The posters were saved as a high-resolution 24-bit color, uncompressed TIFF image, with a minimum resolution of 300 pixels per inch. The website presents the images as thumbnails, with the ability to enlarge to screen size.

The collection uses a vast metadata scheme. Characteristics for each image include: Unique Digital Identifier, Title, Caption, Creator, Publisher, Year of creation, Owning Repository, Object Location, Medium, Media, Original Dimensions, Description, Use/Rights, Notes, File Format, Bit Depth, and Resolution. The metadata elements were encoded using XML.

The collection is a great resource, but is not easy to browse. The site would be of more use to researchers than the general public.
