Cleveland Public Library

Collection Principles
The Digital Collection is comprised of 12 indexes that include various topics that include: Cleveland Public Library Art Collection, CPL Archives, and Maps and Atlases of Greater Cleveland (historical). The different indexes are varied and hold images of differing topics. Mostly they contain historical digital images of old Cleveland neighborhoods and public libraries, although the collection also includes images of chess tournaments. The collection also includes images of the personal collection of Cleveland author Charles W. Chestnutt.

Metadata
This collection offers metadata! Each image includes specific information about the image, its digitization and its physical location within the library. Other metadata includes: Title, Medium, Measurement, Source, Location, Subject, Identifier, Source Image, Repository, Rights, Type, Digital Format, Digital processing information (digital treatment and what department within the CPL did the digitizing).

Object Characteristics
All images are in color except for b & w images. Some items were scanned from
transparencies, scanned at 600 dpi, Epson Perfection 4990. Images include JPGs as well as TIFs. Digitization occurred in-house at the Cleveland Public Library.

Audience
This collection runs the gamut and because of its wide and yet eclectic assets it can appeal to a wide audience. There are considerable images that can serve a local historian well that may happen to have an interest in chess tournaments. I found this collection while searching for an image of Eleanor Ledbetter, librarian to the masses of Cleveland, through a Google search but found it impossible to find through the main Cleveland Public Library website – it’s pretty buried.
