The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire Online Exhibit

This online exhibit is presented by the Bancroft Library from the University of California at Berkley. This online exhibit was created as part of the 100th anniversary of the disaster, and presents digitized historical artifacts created at the time of the event.

The exhibit is designed as a virtual exhibition with 5 rooms that each represent a major theme: San Francisco in the New Century, The Day Our City Trembeled, A Firestorm From Hell, Surviving a City in Ruins, and Reconstructing a New City.

Each room displays images and text, with links to relevant maps, photographs, silent film, and sounds, with the purpose of telling the story from the perspective of those who lived the experience. Each JPEG image can be enlarged to view at a higher resolution. The metadata presented is limited to an image description, call number, and the collection it belongs to.

This is a unique online exhibit. The site attempts to both present information about the event in an interactive way, and also re-create the feel of experiencing the material within an actual physical exhibit. An audience with a particular interest in this historical event would benefit from visiting this site.
